SWAN: System for Water Analyzing and Nurturing

An IoT water-quality monitoring system for fish and shrimp ponds, built to warn farmers of sudden changes before stock is lost.
In Development2024

Overview

SWAN is Ground Rebotics' water-quality monitoring system for aquaculture. Sensors in the pond track six parameters, the readings are processed on site and sent wirelessly to a mobile app, and the system can switch aerators automatically when conditions change. It is being developed in two versions: SWAN 1.0, a stationary unit that monitors up to four ponds at once, and SWAN 2.0, a solar-powered floating unit for a single large pond.

Problem

In intensive fish and shrimp farming, water quality can change quickly. A sudden fall in dissolved oxygen, or a shift in pH, ammonia or dissolved solids, can stress stock, spread disease and cause losses overnight. Many farms still check water by hand, so problems are often found too late.

Approach

Measure continuously, alert early and act automatically. SWAN reads the pond around the clock, sends an alert to the farmer's phone when a parameter moves outside its safe range, and can switch aerators on or off without anyone at the pond.

Technology

Six parameters: dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, ammonia, total dissolved solids (TDS) and salinity. A processing unit, a control unit and a wireless unit, communicating over IoT protocols. Fluctuation alerts and app services on mobile, and automatic aerator control. SWAN 1.0: stationary, four ponds from one unit. SWAN 2.0: mobile and solar-powered, one pond.

Applications

SWAN 1.0 is aimed at small-pond farms and at recirculating aquaculture (RAS) and bio-floc systems. SWAN 2.0 is aimed at large ponds such as shrimp farms. A companion app, SWAN-Central, is planned to bring pond monitoring together with farm supplies, selling produce, help from field experts and information on government schemes.
